Spaces
The quiet work of a good plan
Proportion, thresholds and the routes we take every day.

Start with everyday routes
The path from the entrance to the kitchen, the distance from a bedroom to a bathroom and the place to put a coat all shape our experience of a home. These ordinary movements deserve careful attention.
Use thresholds well
A small change in ceiling height or a deeper doorway can make one room feel distinct from another without closing the plan. Thresholds create a sense of arrival and give open spaces a useful rhythm.
Give rooms more than one use
A well-proportioned room can change with its occupants. A reading corner may become a desk, and a guest room may become a studio. Good plans anticipate change without becoming vague.
