Materials
Materials that become better with time
Choosing surfaces for use, repair and the marks of everyday life.

Think beyond the sample
A small sample rarely tells the whole story. We look at a material in changing light, at a larger scale and beside its neighbours. We also ask what happens when it is touched, cleaned and repaired.
Allow for wear
Timber can be refinished, stone can be honed again and solid hardware can be maintained. These qualities matter as much as the first impression. A material that welcomes use is often more convincing than one that tries to remain untouched.
Keep the palette small
A limited palette makes the differences between materials more visible. Grain, texture and temperature become the detail. Fewer finishes also make future repair and replacement easier to manage.
